Treasures and a Mystery

A visit to a newly found op-shop this week resulted in a few treasures at bargain prices.

Johnson of Australia- 8 each of dinner and bread and butter plates ($2).

Pyrex bowl, for 50c how could I not have this little one.

Australian Golden Stamp Book and Austrlain Golden Project Book with gummed stamps. And FiFi, eying off the illustrated feathered creatures.

And a bag of buttons, spools of thread and this mystery item at the front. I'm thinking it's something sewing related, but I havent been able to find out what it is. It feels fairly heavy for its size, the end is fairly pointed, and looks to be made of bone or maybe tusk. Any ideas on what it is would be great.

  3. Great finds. I love those plates. I had that Australian Golden Stamp Book (the one on the left) when I was young. It was one of my favourite.

  6. Some great finds! I've recently been op shopping too. I think the sewing tool in the last picture is a 'sewing stiletto' traditionally used for making eyelet holes in needlework, sewing and leather but in more recent times a useful tool used by quilters to get into tight spots where fingers are too frumpy and at risk of being sewn over by a sewing machine.

  8. I love your vintage cotton spools! Gorgeous. I agree with Teresa, it is a stiletto. Stilettos can also be used to transfer pattern markings to fabric such as pocket posiitons or darts. You poke a faint hole through the pattern into the fabric a centimetre or so inside where you will stitch so the hole wont be visible in the finished garment. Enjoy your treasures and thanks for the idea about my doilies ;)
