The best type of thrifting

Last weeks Bathurst op-shopping adventure also revealed the best type of thrifting...

the free type.

Wandering around the Salvos I spied this suitcase in a trailer out the back. Now I couldn't just leave it there, so off I went to find the op-shop lady, "Oh all the stuff in the trailer is for the tip".  So as you can see the case didn't end up at the tip, instead coming home with us for nothing.

My luck didn't end there...

inside revealed a collection of sewing supplies...

including binding and trim

belt, and zippers

patterns and lace

fabric and old photos...

Rescued from what was destined to become landfill. It doesn't get much better than that.

  4. Oh My Goodness! How could they have thought of just dumping all that at the tip. I'm so glad you rescued that fabulous bundle. Can't remember if I told you in the previous post how much I admired your cushion but it doesn't matter if I say it again anyway does it.

  5. Wow it shows just how wasteful some of the oppies are being with perfectly good items. Score for you though rescuing these goodies!! xx

  6. Do you feel you've just had a special glimpse into somebody's life? How sad that nobody deemed any of that worth saving and how wonderful that you did. That fabric is rather lovely too!

  8. Thank goodness you came along Zara! How could anyone throw away a case like that filled with such gorgeousness? Did they even bother opening it d'you think?

  9. Wow, great rescue! Begs the question of why on earth it was going to the tip and what else gets thrown out that shouldn't? My mum has watched her local chop up furniture into kindling, maybe a free section should be their first option?! Enjoy your treasure :)

  10. That was treasure....it still amazes me what some people will part with...that was probably an old ladies bits and pieces...that no one cared about, ending up in the back of the salvos trailer....so glad you managed to save it all....and love it as well....

  12. Nice find, a real rescue.
How sad that either the owner of family of the owner didn't have the time to sort that stuff. I know when I went through my mother's house it took my whole 6 weeks of christmas holidays and then many more trips to sydney to complete it all.
I just feel lucky that I was able to leave it for 6 months to go back in holidays and there wasn't any real rush to sell the house. I know that other people when their family have gone into aged care or died, that there are bills or mortgages and they all get together and empty homes in a couple of weekends, they either don't want to spend the time going through it or simply can't emotionally or otherwise.

That case looks to me like a man has taken it to the op shop, I don't think they place the same value on sewing notions or photos as we girls do.

  15. An absolutely amazing find Zara!
It can be quite criminal what the op shops throw away, I used to volunteer at Vinnies and was shocked by what went into the bin.

  18. What a great stash! I always get so sad when I see old photos that have been thrown away.....they obviously meant so much to someone at some point (unlike now...where I'll take a billion photos on the off chance one is good and we don't need to print them to see results ) as photos were expensive and worth treasuring. I also just love seeing the clothes!
