made by hand: bark cloth

with my sewing machine back from a service I'm back into the sewing. the bark cloth I op-shopped back here is fast transforming from curtain to dress. the bodice is just about completed, now just to add the skirt part. and of course the (ever essential) pockets.

speaking of vintage linens the lovely Elaina of a little bit country is running 'the travelling linen stash'. pop on over if you'd like to find out all the details & join in the fun.

  8. I love it. I actually used to have a skirt made in a similar fabric, a long time ago.

  10. Zara, just a note here to say a big THANK YOU for my lovely parcel in the mail. I'm trying to work out how to email, but it's not working for me. Your crotchet is so fine and beautiful. It is addictive. A lovely parcel in the post, thank you.

  11. Bark cloth is such a lovely thing and you are so clever to make an actual dress. I'm more a tablecloth girl. You put Maria Von Trap to shame!

  12. Well done. I am always nervous when it comes to cutting up large pieces of vintage fabric, however to bring new life into it is so much better than it sitting in my stash for years. I eagerly await the viewing of the finished dress.

  13. Zara, what a delicious retro creation!
My Mum had curtains in that fabric, I am sure the design was identical; I know the colours are the same. Those bark cloth curtains were stored for some years after moving house until one day she - who rarely used a sewing machine - began a frenzied sewing spree like a woman possessed, turning the bark cloth curtains into dozens of pot-holders and oven mitts, lining them with old woollen blankets or worn bath towels, then giving them away with gay abandon! I always had a sense of her pride on visiting friends and relatives to see they'd been the recipient of Mum's once-in-a-lifetime sewing frenzy, and were actually making use of her creations!
Thanks for triggering that memory of my Mum's few forays into homecrafts and repurposing. x
