our new home brought with it a new garden. a lovely level block with a good few established fruit tress and plenty of shrubs and succulents (and the simply stunning Sturt Desert Peas sprouting under the Hills Hoist)
one of the first things on our 'to do' list was to get a few plants in the ground so they could get growing and producing.
we've popped 5 olives along the front fence and a grape vine to trellis along the front verandah for much needed summer shade and dappled sunshine in the cooler months.
vegie seeds are planted in a concrete sink topped with an old window.
we've fertilised, pruned and mulched the oranges, lemon, cumquot and fig.
next on the list is to build a chook shed.

this weekend just past I was lucky enough to attend the 3rd annual 'flour and fire day' hosted by Jane of the shady baker, at her property. I remember reading Jane's post back in 2014 and thinking how lovely the day sounded and hoping one day to be a part of it.

the day started with hot coffee made over the open fire, freshly baked sweet treats and getting to know each other. I got to meet some lovely bloggers who I have gotten to know online, Sophie and Kate. gosh I still can't get used to meeting people for the first time though we've 'known' each other for so long through our blogs.

then it was into the bread making, with Jane sharing her sourdough making skills with us.
we all enjoyed a homemade lunch of bread straight out of the woodfired oven, lamb stew and freshly made pasta and pesto.
after lunch it was candle making time. I hosted this little activity. everyone brought along a vessel or two to fill and with the beeswax melted over the wood fire we added a cotton wick and filled our teacups, jars and tins with the delicious smelling wax.
we left with full tummies, a whole lot of inspiration and baskets filled with homegrown and homemade goodies from the swap table.

I'm already looking forward to the 2016 flour and fire day.
I was partnered up with Mezz. so with details exchanged we both got sewing. with our love of vintage sheets we were well paired.
we've just made the big (and exciting) leap and became first home owners. it's all gone pretty smoothly so far (thank goodness) without much trouble in our dealings with the bank, conveyancer and real estate agent. the whole house buying process was all new to us so there was a bit of stress with how to go about making an offer, building inspections, getting financial approval, the need for a conveyancer, taking out insurance.. the list goes on.

and today we got to pick up the keys and have a good look around.
the house is a simple 2 bedroom home with mostly original mint-coloured kitchen and bathroom and a quaint outdoor (part of the back verandah) laundry and second loo.
there's a mismatch of carpets, cream paint and a rather unsightly suspended ceiling but the bones are good and as I look around all I see is potential.
outside there's a pair of orange trees, a lemon, cumquat and fig tree... the startings of what I hope will become a very productive permaculture space. and chooks again... I can't wait.

I'm looking forward to updating as we go and have taken plenty of 'before' photos to share. xZarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09577592390723365734noreply@blogger.com22tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030861504339238132.post-9101588211933112062015-05-25T15:15:00.001+09:302015-05-25T15:15:04.020+09:30simple cleaning

for the past little while I've been slowly cutting down on the purchasing of cleaning products. underneath the kitchen sink which was once full of bottles and cans (with their warning labels and expensive price tags) now instead sits dishwashing liquid, a jar of bicarb-soda, a bottle or two of vinegar, along with a some essential oils.
these staples see me through most cleaning now.

Tile and wooden floor cleaner
to a bucket of hot water add
a squirt of dishwashing liquid
1 cup vinegar
1/4 cup bicarb soda
mop floor as usual

Foaming bath and toilet cleaner
Heat 1 cup of vinegar in a 1L microwave safe jug in the microwave for 2-3 minutes until piping hot.
Stir in 1/3 cup dishwashing liquid.
Add 2 tablespoons bicarb soda and stir quickly (be sure to be close by the bath/toilet as the mixture foams up and may overflow the jug).
Pour to coat the surface of the bath/toilet bowl. Leave for a minimum of 1 hour. A little scrub may be required then rinse with clean water.

Fabric freshener
Choose a large container/jar you wish to use to hold the fabric freshener.
To a jug add the required amount of vinegar to fill the container. to this add 1-2 tablespoons bi-carb soda. You will need to do this slowly as it will foam up.
Once the bi-carb is dissolved add a couple of drops of the essential oil of your choice (i like eucalyptus, lemon myrtle or peppermint) then decant into your chosen container or jar.
Add a good half cup to the fabric softener dispenser in your washing machine and wash as usual.
I have my first sour dough starter up and going. every day I had a spoonful or two of flour and a splash of water and it seems happy enough bubbling away. I'm making a loaf of simple no-knead bread once or twice a week now and it's something I look forward to every time.
this weekend I was treated to a night away in the lovely little town on Mildura. we stocked up on plenty of fresh produce from the roadside stalls along the way and the Farmers Markets had plenty of delicious home grown goodies too. time flew by and I'm already planning for the next trip there.
In February I started pottery classes. it's something I've wanted to do for some time. i enjoyed pottery in high school art lessons and did a couple of classes outside of school too.
so when i saw that their was a local pottery group in town i signed up and i'm so glad i did.

i attend a three hour evening class once a week held at the cutest corrugated iron clad building that was once an old Scout Hall.
now these 'classes' are pretty laid back, with each person working at their own pace on whichever project they choose.
i started off with a simple slab pot. where i rolled a piece of clay to about 1cm thick and cut four rectangular sides and a base before 'gluing' the edges together with a slurry and further strengthening the joins with a clay coil.
i then moved onto making bowls using the pinch pot method.

it really is addictive and i've been busily pinning all things pottery inspiration on pinterest.
i cant wait to start back again after easter break.

have you tried pottery before? is there a pottery group in your local town?

have you popped by Taz's blog butter and buntings lately? if not you may have missed the handmade dress swap she is currently hosting. If you're handy with a sewing machine (even if only at a basic level) or know someone that can sew for you, you can join in. and if you don't feel up to making a dress you can also join in by making and swapping a skirt instead.
I think a simple shift style dress is perfect for this swap. something with only a couple of pattern pieces and the sizing is fairly forgiving too.

think of all the possibilities... using a vintage sheet or tablecloth, adding pockets maybe made from doilies, or adding a lace or pom pom trim around the hem

also you there's still time to get involved in my vintage sheet FQ swap 2015. you can find all the details here.

a little Autumn give away just for you.
first up a wall pennant. I made this from a vintage cotton sheet with the prettiest leaf design and free-hand stitched the quote. it will come with a dowel and twine for easy display on your wall.
next up a copy of the latest Pip magazine. I somehow managed to find myself with 2 copies so this one is for you. this is an Aussie magazine full of all things permaculture. this issue has informative articles on saving tomato seeds, no-dig gardening, making your own cheese and tips on decluttering your home.

to be in the running simply leave a comment telling me what you love about Autumn.
this little give-away is open internationally.
good luck.

open until April 8, 2015.

another dress. a bit of a change as this one is not made by me, instead it's a little tienda dress (my second one now) and in a beautiful shade of blue with a rainbow of embroidery.

I've found some beautiful vintage sheets lately and am also in the process of making a quilt. this got me thinking about when I last hosted the vintage sheet FQ swap. looking back through my blog it's been well over a year.. September 2013 to be exact.
it was such fun swapping all those vintage sheets with others who have a soft spot for pretty florals so I'm hosting another.

to get involved simply leave a comment with your email address. alternatively you can email me at zara-117(at)hotmail(dot)com and let me know that you're interested in joining in this swap.

i will email all participants as you sign up with more details on the swap.

please have your vintage sheet FQs in the post to me by the 31st March, 2015. this gives you a bit over a month to source/raid the stash for vintage sheets. i will aim to have the FQs swapped and in the post by the end of the following week.

you can choose to swap as many or as few FQs as you want. the number of FQs you send will be the number you receive back.

place your FQs into a pre-paid parcel satchel. also include a self-addressed pre-paid post satchel so I can send your newly swapped FQs back to you.

pre-paid post satchels can be purchased from the post office in 3 sizes:

small satchel $10.55
holds up to 500g
35 x 22cm

medium satchel $14.80
holds up to 3kg
40 x 31cm

large satchel $23.60
holds up to 5kg
51 x 43cm

(Australia Post prices)

the small sized satchel will fit approximately 15 FQs and the medium 3kg satchel will fit 50+ FQs.

now for the important details-

- a fat quarter (FQ) measures approximately 50 x 56cm. these can be ripped or cut to size from the sheet as long as they meet these measurements.
- sheets should be washed prior to being sent
- ensure FQs are free from marks, stains, rips or holes. please only send sheets you would be happy to receive
- please only send cotton or cotton blend sheets. no flannelette or polyester. do not send sheets with cartoon characters or any solid colours

due to differences in how prepaid satchels would work for posting/returning of prepaid satchels overseas, this swap is only open to those living in Australia. sorry.

please share this swap if you'd like. the more involved the greater the variety of sheets you will receive.

if you have any questions please ask.

i'm really looking forward to this swap, and cant wait to see all the pretty florals you find.

a little while bag Taz and I decided to have our own little dress swap. we both like bright and floral so into the stash we went. This is the dress Taz made for me. It's stunning and a real crisp cotton.
You can see the dress I made for Taz here on her blog butter and buntings. I chose a retro floral in teals and purples and a shift style beach dress pattern.
it was such fun sewing a dress for Taz. She's even thinking of hosting a dress swap so if you're interested in joining in, let us know.
I got to meet up with a lovely blog friend, Jane of A Shady Baker. I've only met with one other blogger before, Susan, so it was a real treat to meet another. it's like we already new each other, which I suppose reading each others blogs for a few years is not surprising.
we talked all things op-shopping, collections, old churches, gardening, sourdough starters, farmers markets and Kitchen Aids.
Jane gifted me this beautiful pastel Johnson ware and some homegrown, homemade treats. thank you Jane.

my first (of hopefully many more) wearing post of 2015.
with the weather so hot in my new town I've noticed a bit of a gap in my wardrobe.
one of lose fitting, easy wear dresses.
I made this one with a thrifted tablecloth and a thrifted pattern- Butterick 3349.
it's a simple pattern with (after alterations by me) only two pattern pieces- a front and a back. I tried a high/low hem for the first time too.
I'm still trying to perfect the neckline binding. I can't seem to make it sit flat. any tips?
wearing it with Lotta clogs, WeWood watch and thrifted bangle.

Here's a little list of my goals for 2015. I'm joining in with Sophie over at Her Library Adventures.
I hope to check back throughout the year and be able to tick at least some of these goals off the list. let me know if you share your thirty goals too.

1. sew, sew and sew some more. I want to sew more clothes for myself and also get my little shop open and stocked again
2. gardening. this will be a bit of a challenge but I at least want to have a few herbs going and also get a compost pile/worm farm happening for all the kitchen scraps
3. get cutting and pasting in my inspiration scrapbook
4. continue with the ethical clothing pledge of 2014, I shopped my wardrobe, found some beautiful pieces while op-shopping and made a few purchases from ethical businesses
5. not buy bread, instead making our own. I'd like to get my own sour dough starter happening too
6. take pottery classes, I'm pretty sure there's a group in town
7. make more cleaning and beauty products including washing liquid, facial exfoliator, shampoo and conditioner
8. say 'no' to disposable coffee cups. I invested in a 'keep cup' each so now just the challenge of remembering to bring them with us while out and about
9. learn the art of macramé
10. get to know and understand the functions of my camera better
11. Try weaving. I op-shopped a little loom a while back so now just have to find some yarn to weave
12. Try screen printing
13. Make a strap for my camera
14. upcycle some of the silver cutlery collection.. I'm thinking jewellery
15. upcycle some broken plates.. yes the move did unfortunately result in a few Johnson casualties
16. use the cookbook collection and try new recipes
17. make a timber Christmas tree for December 2015
18. make soap
19. make a terrarium
20. buy groceries from locally owned small businesses rather then the big chains
21. keep the house tidier by doing a little cleaning everyday
22. blog at least once a week, maybe twice
23. send more happy mail
24. discover the perfect museli bar recipe
25. drink more water everyday
26. make more handmade gifts
27. cull more stuff.. kitchenware and craft room
28. buy based on quality rather than price
29. print and frame some of my photos
30. organise a weddingZarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09577592390723365734noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7030861504339238132.post-30448786120855100622014-12-22T20:48:00.002+10:302014-12-22T20:48:40.055+10:30fruit cake

so I'm probably a bit late with the Christmas baking but today after a quick trip to the shops to pick up some supplies I set to making a fruit cake. I based my recipe on a CWA recipe (always a winner in my book) for Glad Shute's Christmas Fruit Cake. I left out the alcohol as I didn't have any on hand.

1.375kg mixed fruit. I decided to make up my own combination rather than use the pre-mixed variety. (250g pitted prunes, 375g dried figs, 200g dried apricots, 550g sultanas)
250g butter
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 tablespoons golden syrup or molasses
1 1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves

Combine all these ingredients in a large pot and place over medium heat on the stove top. Bring to the boil and boil for 3 minutes.
Leave to cool.

4 eggs
1/2 cup hot water
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon bi-carb soda
2 cups plain flour (I used spelt flour)
1 1/2 cups SR flour
1 cup chopped nuts (I used half almonds and half macadamias

Beat eggs in a small bowl along with vanilla. Add to cooled fruit mixture.
Dissolve the bi-carb in the hot water and stir into the fruit mixture.
Fold in the flour and chopped nuts.

Bake for 3 hours at 160 degrees Celsius in lined cake tin/s .
Will make one large round cake or two smaller ones.
Cut a round of brown paper to place over the top of the cake while cooking to avoid a burnt top.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool slowly, with the tin wrapped in a towel.

Store by wrapping in foil and placing in a cake tin. enjoy.

wishing you a lovely Christmas. x

after a stressful few weeks and a long drive we are settling in well to our new house in the central west of NSW.
all the 'necessity' boxes have been unpacked. over a dozen boxes filled with crockery and kitchen ware remain taped up. I'm not sure when i'll unpack them yet.
my love has started his new job. a new career that has been a goal for many years.
I've visited some of the op-shops already and they are a treasure trove of vintage goodies... Ladybird books, floral sheets, glass Christmas baubles and retro dresses all came home with me.
I've tested out the new kitchen with a batch of cocoa nib cookies, carrot cake, roast and baked spuds.
the sewing machine is set up and I've attended to a few jobs... two sets of curtains and a fitted sheet from vintage florals. the thing with vintage linens is fitted sheets are a rare thing. I hope to make a few dresses in the coming weeks. the stinking hot days call for lose-fitting smock dresses.
we are missing our chooks. we gave them to a new home before we left. the long drive and the huge change of climate would have been too much for them to cope with.
Mitten is settling in well. sadly we farewelled our black and white cat Tillie before we moved.

after a forced internet break i'm looking forward to catching up with all your happenings. I've also joined instagram, you can find me at zarannehandmade

hope you're having a lovely weekend. x

our home is currently packed up in boxes, so many boxes.
in the next couple of weeks my love and I will be moving. to a new house. in a new town. a town which takes 12 hours of driving to reach.
we're both excited and a bit anxious.
this will be our biggest move yet.
I'm looking forward to unpacking those boxes and decorating our new home. to settling in to a new community. to lots of new photos and the chance to share them with you.

and so the adventure begins...

a few of my favourite things.

dreams that turn into plans, that turn into reality... have you seen the amazing idea that Rohan and Kate have. It's called the nursery project. it will be a place where you can get in there and experience growing your own vegies, picking, preserving, foraging, hunting, cooking and eating. and you can contribute towards making this dream a reality. every little bit helps.

garden growth... there are so many baby apples on the tree. self seeded poppies and nasturtiums are blooming too.

a bouquet of rosemary.. the plants needed a good trim so in came the stems and into a milk glass vase they went.

op-shopping... I've scored some beautiful pieces of clothing lately- a denim dress, lace cropped jacket, polo shirts, a handmade skirt as well as milk glass, a length of linen fabric for sewing and floral sheets.
a collection of op-shop finds from the last couple of weeks. I've visited a few different op-shops of late, some in Kiama, yesterday saw a drive to Canberra so of course that meant a sticky beak around a couple of oppies there, and then today around the local ones here in town.

milk glass- 50c to $4 each
a sunny yellow chair to add to the mismatched collection that surround the laminex kitchen table. I only discovered the Australiana design while giving it a scrub when I bought it home ($5)
pretty florals ($8 for the both)
a huge Pyrex dish ($6)

have you discovered any op-shop treasures lately that just had to come home with you?

today we made the drive to Murrumbateman to visit the annual Murrumbateman Field Days.
the sun was shining, a perfect Spring day really. there was so much to look at, and dream of one day buying for a farm of our own.
there are hundreds of exhibitors including cute Belted Galloway cattle, bags of freshly picked apples, fudge, solar panels, tractors, worm farms, alpaca scarves and blankets, chooks, timber furniture and vegie seedlings... a bit of everything really.
